Embracing My ADHD Journey: From Overwhelm to Empowerment

Sep 12, 2024

Living with ADHD is a journey that’s deeply personal and uniquely challenging. Not only do both of my sons have ADHD, but I do too. Statistically, if a child has ADHD, there’s a 50% chance that one or both parents also have it. My own ADHD went unnoticed until I was 40. In my 30s, I felt overwhelmed by juggling my kids’ emotions and behaviours, my teaching career, running a household, and finding a moment to connect with my husband. While I was diagnosed with anxiety and given medication, my ADHD remained undiagnosed for years.

This situation is all too common for many women. Our ADHD often presents as anxiety, depression, or overwhelm. Girls who are quiet, daydream, or are forgetful may have inattentive ADHD, but because they’re not physically hyperactive, their struggles often go unnoticed compared to boys. This misdiagnosis means they don’t receive the support they truly need.

Today, I have strategies and systems in place to help me thrive with my ADHD, but I’m still human. Some days are harder than others, and when life’s demands feel overwhelming, managing ADHD symptoms becomes more challenging. I’ve learned to recognize these waves and respond by tuning into my body and intuition. I take time to pull back from the external world and focus on my own well-being. Understanding my ADHD and having the right tools allows me to care for my mental wellness and lead with integrity.
